Maria’s Tabia

The history

My grandmother’s name was Caterina, but everyone, included us, called her Maria. TabiĆ  is a word in dialect which means hayloft. In this case, it refers to a part of the stall and hayloft that date back to the 18th century and was bought by my grandparents in 1926. Afterwards, the building was enlarged, adding a workshop, a storage and an attic used as an hayloft. In the middle of the century, we moved somewhere else and this place remained abandoned and was soon covered by weeds. Therefore, we decided to renovate it and made two large flats out of it, with an external private space, a wide garage and a typical walkway. Even if the building looks like in the past, now there are no cows, nor flocks of sheep or claves; the tub where my grandfather used to press grapes with his bare feet has been removed; the place where once there was the workshop, now houses the kitchen;:the utensils my grandfather used, to build or repair the tools he used in agriculture, are now replaced by the cooker and the pans. Roma, Stella and Bisa were cows’ names. My grandmother was devoted to them, as if they were part of the family. When the cows heard their names, they sheepishly returned home: this gave me a sense of great peace, the same peace I hope people who will be living here, will find. I’m sure my grandmother would be happy about it!
